This beautiful tapestry is a woven reproduction of an early 17th Century world map originally designed by the Dutch cartographer Jan Baptist Vrients (15521612). Vrients was greatly influenced by Abraham Ortelius (1528-1622) the most prominent cartographer of the 16th Century. It shows the world split into two hemispheres and is framed by an acanthus leaf border.
This tapestry evokes the adventure that surrounded the voyages of the 16th and 17th Century Dutch explorers. The map confirms that Dutch pioneers of the day possessed a growing body of knowledge as to the known world.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Fleur de Lys hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
